What happened
Kospi (KS11) fell 18.8% in the third quarter to close at 6,838.04 on Wednesday, the worst of any major market, after memory-chip selloffs and forced liquidations of leveraged Samsung and SK Hynix bets. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix now make up about half the index, up from a quarter at the end of last year, so their fall dragged it down. Funds that make double-sized bets on single stocks added fuel: when prices fell, borrowed money had to be repaid, forcing more selling. The index is still up about 62% for 2026.
Why it matters
The Kospi shows how fast a stock market can fall when a few AI-linked chip companies make up half of it and many investors are borrowing to own them. Even after the quarterly drop, the index is still up about 62% this year. Samsung and SK Hynix now trade at only 4 to 5 times their expected yearly profits, a low price tag by most standards.
