What happened
Constellation Energy (CEG) stock rose 2.3% to $259.82 on Thursday after Amazon signed a 20-year deal for 690 MW of Calvert Cliffs nuclear power, backing over $3B of investment for AI data-center power. The Maryland plant can generate 1,790 megawatts, and the deal also funds about 190 megawatts of new capacity due between 2030 and 2032. Shares hit $269.11, up 5.9%, in early trading before easing, after falling 4% the day before when federal regulators delayed a PJM power-grid backup plan.
Why it matters
Constellation Energy now has a big customer locked in for 20 years, which gives its Maryland plant steadier income. Amazon's commitment is meant to help pay for renewing the plant's operating license for another 20 years and to add new carbon-free power. It also shows that big tech companies will sign long contracts for reliable electricity as AI data centers use more power.
