What happened
Tesla (TSLA) stock fell 3.9% to $357.45 on Monday after analysts cut third-quarter delivery forecasts and the company pushed its Roadster reveal to October 15. JPMorgan, a large Wall Street bank, lowered its estimate for cars Tesla delivered from July to September to 482,000 from 516,000, citing weaker sales in the U.S. and China. Analysts on average expect about 463,000 deliveries, roughly 7% fewer than a year ago, and the lowest forecast on the Street is 421,758. Tesla said the outdoor Roadster event, first planned for October 1, moved because of severe weather forecasts. Tesla reports its actual deliveries on Friday, October 2.
Why it matters
Tesla stock matters to many everyday investors because delivery numbers are the clearest regular check on whether people are still buying its cars. Analysts now expect about 463,000 cars for July to September, roughly 7% fewer than a year earlier. JPMorgan also lowered its profit-margin outlook, meaning less profit per car, because of higher material costs and discounts. Shares are down roughly 15% to 20% this year, depending on the source.
