What happened

Nidec (6594.T) stock rose about 6% to around ¥2,390 on Wednesday after the motor maker confirmed final talks to sell its components unit to Carlyle for over $636 million. It would be Nidec's first major subsidiary sale. Nidec wants cash and a simpler business after an accounting scandal and an expected write-down (a one-time accounting loss) of about ¥1 trillion, mostly from electric-vehicle motors. Its CEO resigned this week, and delayed results were due Wednesday. The jump ended two days of losses.

Why it matters

Nidec is one of the world's largest makers of precision motors, used in cars and factory equipment, so its recovery matters to customers and shareholders. Selling a unit brings in cash and shows the company is willing to shrink to fix its problems. The stock is still unsettled, because the huge write-down and the accounting questions have not gone away.
