What happened
Micron (MU) stock is up about 270% this year to roughly $1,070 and reports earnings after the close Wednesday, with investors betting AI-driven memory shortages keep sales and profits surging. In June, Micron said it expected about $50 billion in sales and $31 per share in profit this quarter (its own forecast, called guidance). Analysts expect slightly more, roughly $51 billion and $31.60 a share, compared with $11.3 billion and $3.03 a year ago. Last quarter, sales were $41.46 billion, up 346%.
Why it matters
Micron is a main supplier of the memory chips that AI data centers are buying in huge amounts, so supply is tight and prices are rising. Its report is a test of whether the boom is as strong as the stock price assumes. After a gain of about 270%, merely meeting forecasts may not excite investors. Higher memory costs are also reaching consumers, as Apple reportedly raised iPhone 18 Pro prices by $100.
