What happened
DroneShield (ASX:DRO) stock rose 9% to A$1.76 on Wednesday after winning a US counter-drone contract worth up to US$500 million over three years, a ceiling rather than guaranteed orders. The deal is an "indefinite delivery" contract, meaning the US government can place orders as needs arise. It supports Domestic Shield, a program to protect US bases and key sites from small drones. DroneShield said no orders are locked in yet. The stock closed at A$1.615 the day before and reached its highest level since 1 September.
Why it matters
DroneShield now has a formal route to sell its counter-drone systems, which detect and stop small drones, to the US government. The US$500 million is a maximum, not a promised sale, so real revenue depends on orders placed later. Even after the jump, the shares are still down more than 60% over 12 months, so investors are weighing the deal against a long slide.
