What happened
Google (GOOGL) said on Wednesday it will invest €13 billion ($15 billion) in Finland's AI infrastructure, its largest-ever European commitment, including a 22-year nuclear power deal. The money will be spent in 2027 and 2028 on three new data centers in Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala, plus a bigger Hamina site. It also struck a 22-year deal with utility Fortum for up to half the output of the Loviisa nuclear plant, extending its life to 2050, alongside new wind and battery deals. Google expects the project to support over 37,000 jobs while building and about 7,000 permanent jobs once running, adding roughly €3.6 billion a year to Finland's economy.
Why it matters
Google's bet shows Big Tech is now willing to build entire power plants worth of clean energy just to keep AI data centers running, not only servers and chips. The deal gives a struggling nuclear plant a new 22-year lease on life and locks in a major electricity buyer for Finland's grid. For Finland, it means thousands of construction and long-term jobs and a meaningful boost to a small economy's GDP. For investors, it shows Alphabet keeps raising AI spending as rivals pour billions into similar European projects.
