What happened
Wistron (3231.TW) stock fell 6% on Tuesday after the Taiwanese AI server maker priced a $1.47 billion global share sale at $58.88 per receipt, a 5.5% discount, to fund raw-material purchases. The deal issues 25 million depositary receipts equal to 250 million new common shares, diluting existing shareholders by about 7.29%. Wistron makes AI servers for Nvidia and opened a $700 million plant in Fort Worth, Texas in July, its first US factory, to build Nvidia's newest AI computers. The company's most recent quarterly profit jumped 128% from a year earlier as AI server demand surged.
Why it matters
Wistron is one of the world's biggest builders of the physical AI servers that power chatbots and data centers, so its supply chain matters to the wider AI boom. Selling new shares at a discount means existing Wistron shareholders now own a smaller slice of the company, which is why the stock dropped even though the money is going toward growth. It shows how fast-growing AI hardware makers are burning cash to buy chips and other parts just to keep up with orders from Nvidia and cloud giants.
