What happened
Bombardier (BBD.B:TSX) stock rose 3.6% to C$315.12 on Monday after President Trump said the company can no longer sell jets in the US unless it builds them domestically. Trump said on Truth Social that Bombardier's planes "aren't good enough" and it must build in America or lose the US market. It follows a January threat to decertify Bombardier's jets and impose a 50% tariff, which knocked shares down about 9%. Bombardier says it supports about 2,800 US suppliers and spends over $2.5 billion a year in America. Canada's $20 billion in retaliatory tariffs also took effect Tuesday, doubling steel and aluminum duties to 50%.
Why it matters
Bombardier is one of Canada's largest manufacturers and depends heavily on US customers and suppliers, so a real sales ban would hit a major source of its revenue. The threat also shows how the US-Canada trade fight is spreading beyond metals and farm goods into high-value industries like aerospace. For investors, it signals that specific companies — not just whole countries — can now become targets in tariff disputes, adding a new layer of unpredictability to cross-border manufacturing.
