What happened
South Korea's Kospi (KS11) jumped 4.6% to 6,995.39 on Monday, while Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 2.1% to 66,399.84, led by Samsung, SK Hynix, SoftBank and Advantest on surging AI chip demand. Samsung Electronics gained 5.68% and SK Hynix jumped 8.26%, both riding hopes that new AI models will need more high-capacity memory chips. In Tokyo, SoftBank Group and Advantest, a chip-testing equipment maker, also climbed as the rally spread. The move followed a Friday jump in US chip stocks after strong August jobs data boosted confidence in the AI hardware trade. Kospi ended near the 7,000-point milestone as Goldman Sachs kept its 12,000 target for the index.
Why it matters
Kospi's jump shows how much South Korea's whole stock market now rides on a handful of memory-chip makers, since Samsung and SK Hynix drive much of its gains. When AI systems need more computing power, memory chips (DRAM and NAND) that store and move data become scarce, pushing up prices and profits for the firms that make them. The same optimism is lifting Japanese suppliers SoftBank and Advantest, showing the AI chip rally has become a regional story, not just a Korean one.
