Cboe (CBOE) Stock Rises 4% on S&P 500 Options Deal to 2051

Cboe shares rose about 4% after the exchange operator secured a 25-year extension of its exclusive S&P 500 options license with S&P Dow Jones Indices.

  • Cboe (CBOE) extended its exclusive SPX options license with S&P Dow Jones Indices by 25 years, through 2051.
  • The shares rose about 4%, after jumping as much as 10% at the open on Sept. 30 from a prior close near $253.
  • The 2027 royalty reset is expected to have a "de minimis" effect on net revenue growth, and no fee change applies in 2026.

Lead

Cboe Global Markets (CBOE) gained about 4% in Tuesday trading after it and S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on Sept. 29 a 25-year extension of the exclusive licensing agreement covering S&P 500 Index options. The deal runs through 2051. It preserves the exchange's sole right to list SPX options, the flagship product of a relationship that began in 1983.

The move followed a sharper opening spike. The stock rose as much as 10% early before settling into a narrower gain, leaving it well below its 52-week high of roughly $371.

What Does the Extension Cover?

The agreement secures Cboe's exclusive rights to list options on the S&P 500, one of the most actively traded index derivatives in the world. SPX options volume reached a record 970.6 million contracts in 2025, an average of 3.9 million a day, up 25% from the prior year. It was the fourth consecutive record year.

The release also points to growth in Cboe's VIX options and futures franchise. The two companies said they may explore products beyond traditional index derivatives, including tokenized options contracts. No tokenized product, launch date or filing has been announced, and any such contract would be separate from the SPX options that trade today.

Craig Donohue, chief executive of Cboe, said the extension lets the company grow its SPX and VIX franchises while providing "the certainty and continuity" customers expect. Catherine Clay, chief executive of S&P Dow Jones Indices, said Cboe's expertise in operating liquid derivatives markets complements her firm's index expertise.

Why Did Cboe Shares React This Way?

Investors priced out a long-term risk. SPX options are a central driver of Cboe's derivatives revenue, and the exclusive license is the legal foundation for that franchise. Cboe revenue rose from about $3.49 billion in 2021 to $4.71 billion in 2025, roughly 8% a year. Locking in the license through 2051 removes the possibility that a competing venue could list the contract or that renewal terms would be renegotiated at a disadvantage.

Cboe said a royalty reset taking effect in 2027 will have a "de minimis" impact on net revenue growth. No dollar figures were disclosed. The 2026 fee structure is unchanged.

The stock traded around $266 in late-morning trading at its peak gain, about 18 times forward earnings. Consensus expectations point to annual earnings growth near 19%.

Competitive and Market Context

The exclusivity applies to options on the index itself. Options on funds that track it, such as the SPY ETF, trade on multiple exchanges, which gives investors an alternative route to S&P 500 exposure. SPX contracts are cash-settled and carry distinct tax and contract-size features that have kept institutional demand concentrated on Cboe. S&P Global (SPGI), the parent of S&P Dow Jones Indices, is the licensor in the arrangement.

What Comes Next for Cboe?

Near-term attention turns to third-quarter results, scheduled for Oct. 30 before the market opens. Full-year 2027 guidance is due in February and will be the first to reflect the new royalty terms. Any detail on the tokenized options concept would be a separate catalyst, since no timetable exists.

Outlook

The extension removes the main structural uncertainty around Cboe's largest product line for a generation. Near-term earnings impact is limited by the modest royalty adjustment. The longer-term case now rests on continued volume growth in SPX and VIX products and whether the tokenization talks produce a concrete offering.
