What happened
SpaceX (SPCX) stock rose 1.9% Friday to $147.49 before Musk said on Sunday that SpaceX closed $40 billion in debt for Nvidia GPUs and warned of neocloud failures. Musk said the money mostly buys AI chips (GPUs) due in early 2027, and SpaceX could borrow because lenders rate it as a safe borrower and it earns money from Starlink and rocket launches. He predicted more than 200 neoclouds, firms that rent out AI computing power, will see "guppy-level death and consolidation". CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN each fell about 2.5% in Sunday overnight trading.
Why it matters
SpaceX is spending heavily on Nvidia chips while borrowing gets harder for smaller AI computing firms, which shows how much money the AI buildout now needs. If lenders pull back, neoclouds such as CoreWeave may struggle to pay for new data centers, leaving the AI race to larger, financially stronger companies. Some CoreWeave bond yields have climbed toward 16%, a sign lenders want extra pay for the risk. Musk's warning is a prediction, not a fact.
