What happened
SK Hynix (000660.KS) shares fell as much as 3% to about ₩1.19 million on Friday after the chipmaker scrapped its Solidigm US IPO, as regulators flagged dual-listing rules and a global chip selloff weighed. SK Hynix said in a filing that its US unit Solidigm, which makes data-storage chips, has stopped looking at a pre-IPO funding round and a US stock market listing (IPO) that could have raised $10–15 billion. The company blamed market conditions, but Korea's financial regulator had said the plan ran against its dual-listing rules, which limit a listed parent and its subsidiary both trading shares. Samsung Electronics, a rival, also fell about 3%.
Why it matters
SK Hynix investors had worried that listing Solidigm separately would dilute their stake in a valuable business and weigh on the parent's share price. Scrapping the IPO removes that worry, but the shares still fell because a wider chip selloff, driven by fears about AI spending, hit Korean stocks the same day. The episode also shows how Korea's tighter dual-listing rules, meant to protect small shareholders, can change big corporate plans.
