What happened
Hang Seng Tech Index (HSTECH) fell 5.0% on Thursday to its lowest level since September 2024 after China's market regulator told e-commerce, livestream and instant-retail platforms to tighten product-quality controls. Early in the day it was down as much as 5.2%, its biggest intraday drop since 17 July. Alibaba (BABA) fell as much as 6.1% and JD.com about 4.7% as the regulator flagged fake goods and misleading promotions. Fears about AI spending and a tax deadline also weighed.
Why it matters
The Hang Seng Tech Index, which tracks Hong Kong's biggest technology companies, is now down about 31% this year, so new Chinese regulation adds to existing worries. The regulator wants stricter checks on what online shops sell, especially on livestream shopping and fast-delivery apps. Tougher quality rules could raise costs for sellers and the platforms that host them.
