What happened
National Australia Bank (NAB.AX) stock fell 2.7% to A$38.82 by midday Tuesday after it said it will cut up to 2,500 jobs by mid-2027, which investors read as a warning on earnings. That is about 6% of its workforce, and up to 1,500 of the roles will go before the end of 2026. The bank expects a one-off cost before tax of about A$300 million (a restructuring charge), compared with about A$80 million in each of the past two years. Most cuts hit management and corporate teams, and the bank says customer-facing roles are not materially affected.
Why it matters
National Australia Bank (NAB.AX) is one of Australia's four big banks, so cutting about 6% of its staff is a major shift for the country's finance workforce. The one-off cost of about A$300 million lands in the 2027 financial year, which will weigh on profit that year. Some investors worried the move points to softer business conditions and pressure on future earnings. A bank workers' union called the timing, close to Christmas, "disgraceful".
