The Block1 min read6 sources

Why did Strategy stock fall 9.6%?

Strategy (MSTR) stock fell 9.6% on Friday to $136.83 after MSCI finalized index rules that could remove crypto-holding non-operating companies, risking forced selling by index funds.

What happened

Strategy (MSTR) stock fell 9.6% on Friday to $136.83 after MSCI finalized index rules that could remove crypto-holding non-operating companies, risking forced selling by index funds. MSCI said companies that mainly hold investments instead of running a business will lose eligibility, and it will name affected firms on November 11. Funds tracking MSCI indexes hold about 13 million Strategy shares, and JPMorgan estimated up to $2.8 billion of forced selling.

Why it matters

Strategy holds more bitcoin than any other public company, so MSCI's rule could change who is allowed to own its shares. If Strategy is removed, funds that copy MSCI's lists would have to sell, which can push the price down whatever the business is doing. It also shows that companies built mainly to hold crypto may be treated differently from ordinary businesses.
