What happened
Silgan Holdings (SLGN) stock rose 5.5% on Monday after it agreed to buy Trivium Packaging with American Industrial Partners in a $3.4 billion deal expected to lift earnings by at least 15%. Silgan will merge its metal food-can and lid businesses with Trivium, a European can maker with about $3 billion in 2025 sales, into one $7.3 billion company. Silgan keeps 60%, the investment firm owns 40%, and Silgan expects about $2.3 billion in cash to pay down debt. The deal is expected to close in mid-2027.
Why it matters
Silgan is making a big bet on metal packaging, the cans and lids used for food, pet food and personal care products. It is using a partner's money to grow while paying down debt, which can make the company less risky to own. The companies expect $225 million in yearly savings by the end of year three, mostly from buying materials together and cutting overhead. Regulators must still approve the deal, so it is not final.
