What happened
Chip stocks (SOX) fell 11.6% in six sessions to Wednesday, erasing $1.64 trillion, after China's CXMT claimed a memory breakthrough and Broadcom's CEO likened AI investing to a casino. Broadcom chief Hock Tan said on Monday that many AI investors "have no clue" what they are buying. CXMT, a Chinese memory-chip maker, then said it made "key progress" on a design that packs more data into each chip, and SK Hynix shares fell about 10%. The index fell again on Friday, its eighth straight loss.
Why it matters
Chip stocks matter because AI hardware makers have driven much of this year's market gains, and a popular semiconductor fund was still up about 64% for 2026 after the drop. The selloff shows investors now doubt whether huge AI spending will pay off, especially if borrowing costs rise on bets of an interest-rate hike. Still, TSMC reported profit up 68.7% and said demand is higher than supply.
