What happened
China stocks are down about 10% this year, with the Shanghai Composite (000001.SS) at 3,707.5 on Thursday, after Beijing urged companies and state funds to buy shares to stem a tech selloff. Bloomberg reported that regulators met Thursday, asked state funds (the "national team") to buy faster, and told major insurers to report their share holdings and avoid locking in losses. That day the tech-heavy ChiNext index fell 2.9% and South Korea's Kospi dropped over 7%. China's economy then grew 4.5% in the third quarter, beating the 4.4% forecast.
Why it matters
China's stock market has lost about 10% this year, and Beijing is now leaning on big investors to hold or buy shares. The losses are centred on technology and artificial intelligence (AI) companies, and more than 100 tech stocks have fallen at least 50% from their 2026 highs. State buying can calm a fall, but it does not change why other investors were selling. Anyone who owns Chinese shares, or funds that hold them, is affected.
