What happened
China's economy is forecast to have grown 4.4% in July–September, in data due Monday, as export strength was offset by weak spending, still below Beijing's 4.5%–5% target. Economists expect shop sales to rise only 0.6% from a year earlier and factory output to rise 5.5%. Spending on buildings and equipment (fixed-asset investment) is expected to be down about 7% so far this year. Exports jumped 36.3% in September, led by chips and cars, while housing and shopper spending stay weak.
Why it matters
China's economy is the world's second largest, so slower growth can affect factory orders, oil and metals prices, and company profits far beyond its borders. A second straight quarter below 4.5% would put more pressure on Beijing to back households and builders with extra support. Growth that leans on exports also adds friction with trading partners, which are pushing China to rebalance trade.
