What happened
Salesforce (CRM) stock rose about 4% on Thursday as investors rotated out of chip stocks, with the semiconductor ETF SMH on track for an eighth straight losing day after hot inflation data. Adobe gained more than 3% and soup maker Campbell's rose about 5%. Nvidia (NVDA) fell nearly 2%, while chipmakers AMD and Marvell fell more than 3%. The chip fund SMH was down about 2% at midday and ended the day roughly 1.5% lower. The shift followed a report that wholesale prices (the PPI) jumped 1.3% in September, the most in over four years, which raised fears of higher interest rates.
Why it matters
Salesforce (CRM) shares rising while chip shares fall shows investors moving money from one part of the stock market to another. Chip stocks had been a favorite way to bet on AI, but worries about heavy borrowing by AI companies and possible higher interest rates are making some investors step back. Software and food makers like Campbell's are seen as steadier, so they gained.
