What happened
Indonesian stocks (^JKSE) fell 11% to about 5,200 on Friday, their worst day since 1998, after MSCI proposed downgrading the market, a move that could force index-tracking funds to sell. MSCI, whose indexes guide billions of dollars of fund money, cited unclear share ownership and suspected coordinated trading. Trading was halted for 30 minutes after an early 8% drop, and 818 stocks fell while only 12 rose. The index is down about 40% this year, and MSCI will decide by June 30, 2027.
Why it matters
Indonesian stocks are now at risk of being dropped from MSCI's emerging-market list, and many big funds simply copy that list, so they would have to sell. UBS estimates about $4 billion from index-tracking funds and $15 billion from other funds could leave if the downgrade goes ahead. Heavy selling can also weaken the rupiah, Indonesia's currency, which traded near 18,070 per US dollar. The final decision is not due until June 2027, so the outcome is still open.
