What happened
The S&P 500 (SPX) fell 1.1% to 7,718.94 on Wednesday, its worst day since July, after September inflation hit 3.7% and raised bets the Federal Reserve will hike interest rates. Consumer prices in September were 3.7% higher than a year earlier, above the 3.6% economists expected. Higher inflation can push the Federal Reserve (the US central bank) to raise interest rates, which tends to hurt fast-growing stocks. Traders now see about a 35% chance of a hike at the next meeting, up from 22% a day earlier. Chipmaker AMD fell more than 5%.
Why it matters
The S&P 500's slide shows how sensitive stocks are to the cost of borrowing. If the Fed raises rates, loans and company financing could get more expensive. The index had set a record high only days earlier and has since fallen on five of six days. Small-company stocks in the Russell 2000 dropped even more, while the Dow barely moved, so the damage was concentrated in technology and growth stocks.
