What happened
Chip stocks fell 4.3% on Wednesday, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) sinking as RBC cut tech to market weight and a hot inflation report fed fears of higher interest rates. RBC lowered tech from "overweight" to "market weight," meaning it no longer wants clients holding more tech than the broader market, and raised health care to overweight. Deutsche Bank had warned days earlier that the tech rally since July was near its peak. RBC also said analysts are raising chip-company profit forecasts more slowly than before. Nvidia (NVDA) closed down 3.2% at $221.30.
Why it matters
RBC's downgrade matters because tech and chip stocks have driven much of this year's market gains, with the SOXX chip fund up 71% in 2026 even after falling over 5% this week. When a big bank tells clients to hold less of a hot sector, money can shift toward cheaper areas like health care. RBC says its call is mostly about price, not collapsing profits, and it still likes software.
