What happened
Nvidia (NVDA) stock fell 3.2% to $221.30 on Wednesday as hotter-than-expected inflation data fueled rate-hike fears and a chip selloff, while CEO Jensen Huang said he would cut off unsafe-AI customers. September consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier, above the 3.6% economists expected, raising fears the Fed, America's central bank, will lift interest rates and make borrowing costlier for AI firms. Separately, Huang told Bloomberg in London he would stop supplying a customer found building unsafe AI, calling it 'a hypothetical, but yes,' though he would talk to them first. The Philadelphia chip index fell 4.3%.
Why it matters
Nvidia makes the chips that power most AI systems, so its share price often sets the mood for the whole AI trade. Higher borrowing costs matter because many AI data centers are built with borrowed money. Huang's remark signals Nvidia is willing to refuse unsafe customers, but he called it hypothetical and named no customer.
