Bitcoin Falls to $82,000 After Hot CPI Report
Why did Bitcoin fall to $82,000?
Bitcoin (BTC) fell about 2% to roughly $82,000 on Wednesday after hotter-than-expected September inflation (CPI) raised the odds the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates again this month.

What happened
Bitcoin (BTC) fell about 2% to roughly $82,000 on Wednesday after hotter-than-expected September inflation (CPI) raised the odds the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates again this month. The US government said prices rose 3.7% in September from a year earlier, up from 3.4% in August and above the 3.6% experts expected. Gasoline jumped 9.1% in one month, which made up more than half of the monthly rise in prices. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell about 5%. Traders now see about a 50% chance of a rate hike on October 28.
Why it matters
Bitcoin's drop shows how closely crypto prices now follow expectations for interest rates. When inflation stays high, the Fed (the US central bank) may raise borrowing costs, which makes risky investments like crypto less attractive. Nearly $1 billion of borrowed-money bets on crypto were forced to close, which sped up the fall. Bitcoin had hit an eight-month high above $86,000 on September 21.
