What happened
Bending Spoons (BSP) stock rose 41% to about $53.50 on Wednesday after Berkshire Hathaway agreed to invest another $330 million, a vote of confidence that lifted Berkshire's stake to 4%. Berkshire will buy 10 million new shares at $33 each in a private deal, about 13% below Tuesday's closing price of $37.86. It first put $600 million into the company at its July listing, priced at $29 a share, so it has now committed about $930 million. The stock is up about 80% since that listing, and the company is worth roughly $33 billion. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.
Why it matters
Bending Spoons buys other software businesses, such as AOL, Vimeo and Evernote, and works to make them more profitable. Berkshire Hathaway is known for patient, long-term investing, so many investors read its extra purchase as a vote of confidence. The new money also gives Bending Spoons more room to pay for acquisitions. Even so, its sales growth excluding acquisitions was only 3% last quarter, so growth leans on buying more companies.
