What happened
Tesla (TSLA) stock slipped 0.7% to $375.23 on Tuesday as federal regulators opened a probe into Model Y robotaxis and Cybercabs accused of speeding in school zones. The U.S. car safety regulator, NHTSA, received a petition on Sept. 23 and opened a review on Oct. 9, covering about 1,000 2026 vehicles, with three videos as evidence. NHTSA says the review does not show Tesla broke any law or that a defect exists, and it has not decided whether to open a full investigation. Tesla did not immediately comment.
Why it matters
Tesla (TSLA) is betting much of its future on self-driving taxis, so safety questions about them matter to its shareholders. School zones often have lower speed limits that change by time of day, so regulators want to know whether the cars follow them. The review is early and could end with no action or lead to a formal investigation. A separate NHTSA probe into how Tesla certified the Cybercab is already open.
