What happened
SpaceX (SPCX) stock fell 4.2% to $156.54 on Tuesday as an AI and memory-chip selloff spread, after China's CXMT flagged cheaper memory technology that threatens chipmakers' profits. Chinese memory maker CXMT said it will sell cheaper server memory chips (DRAM) by year-end, and Samsung fell 7.4% and SK Hynix 10.1% in Seoul. SpaceX, which is buying AI chips for its data centers, fell in sympathy. It also plans a $40 billion debt raise to buy Nvidia chips. The FAA also opened a review of a plan to expand Starbase launches.
Why it matters
SpaceX has become tied to the AI boom, so its shares now react to AI chip news as well as rocket news. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas calls the stock cheap given its expected profit growth and sets a $300 target, about 92% above Tuesday's close. Bond investors are more cautious: the cost of insuring SpaceX's debt against default is up 76% since June.
