Nvidia Stock Falls 1.3% After Microsoft Unveils Maia 300 Chip
Why is Nvidia stock down today?
Nvidia (NVDA) stock fell 1.3% to about $225 on Monday after Microsoft unveiled its Maia 300 in-house AI chip, which it plans to deploy widely next year to rely less on Nvidia.

What happened
Nvidia (NVDA) stock fell 1.3% to about $225 on Monday after Microsoft unveiled its Maia 300 in-house AI chip, which it plans to deploy widely next year to rely less on Nvidia. Maia 300 is built for inference, the stage where an AI model answers questions, and enters production in 2027. Microsoft may deploy more than 1 million of the chips, and says they deliver 40% more output per unit of power than leading graphics-chip (GPU) systems. Chip stocks fell more widely, with AMD down 2.3%, though a Chinese memory-chip announcement also weighed.
Why it matters
Microsoft is one of Nvidia's biggest customers, so building its own chips could mean less spending on Nvidia over time. Microsoft expects to spend over $175 billion on equipment this year, so even small savings per chip add up. But Maia 300 handles only inference, Nvidia still dominates AI training, and earlier Maia chips shipped late and in small numbers.
