What happened

Meta Platforms (META) stock rose 3.4% to $742.96 on Monday after the company launched Muse Wonder, an AI model it says rivals the best from OpenAI and Anthropic. Muse Wonder and a larger version, Muse Wonder Full, are Meta's first "frontier" models, meaning AI systems built to match the best on the market. Developers can use Muse Wonder for $4 per million input tokens (small chunks of text) and $20 per million output tokens, while Wonder Full is limited to subscribers of Meta's Muse Code coding tool. The stock climbed as much as 4.7% during the day.

Why it matters

Meta Platforms is trying to show that its huge spending on artificial intelligence (AI) can produce a product that competes with the makers of ChatGPT and Claude. Until now, Meta had released only a lighter model, called Muse Spark. A model that scores about the same as rivals on standard tests (benchmarks) changes that picture. Meta also plans to charge subscriptions, which could turn costly AI work into revenue.
