What happened
Bumble (BMBL) stock jumped 56% on Tuesday to $5.94 after the dating app agreed to a $1.3 billion go-private deal with Ithaca Holdings at $6.05 a share in cash. Ithaca, a new company run by tech veterans Ravi Gupta and John Hegeman, is paying 138% more than Bumble's share price before news of the talks leaked. Bumble's board approved the deal, and its biggest owners, Blackstone and founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, have already given the shareholder approval needed. Gupta and Hegeman will become co-CEOs. Bumble was valued at about $14 billion at its 2021 stock market debut.
Why it matters
Bumble is leaving the stock market after its sales shrank for almost two years. Its paying users fell 16.4% to 3.2 million in the latest quarter, and younger people are growing tired of endless swiping. Shareholders now get cash instead of waiting for a turnaround, and the company will be run as a private business under new leaders.
