What happened
Broadcom (AVGO) stock fell 1.9% to $354.73 on Monday after CEO Hock Tan said many AI investors 'have no clue' what they own and likened the boom to a casino, rattling chip stocks. Tan spoke at an event in Singapore and said investors were setting 'very extreme expectations' for AI. On Tuesday, South Korea's main stock index (the Kospi) closed 5.5% lower, with memory chipmaker SK hynix down 10.1% and Samsung Electronics down 7.4%. Worries about Chinese memory rival CXMT also weighed on those shares.
Why it matters
Broadcom sells many of the chips that power AI, so its boss questioning how investors view the boom drew attention. Tan still expects Broadcom's AI chip sales to grow from about $58 billion this year to $230 billion by its 2028 financial year. The reaction shows how nervous markets already are about how much is being spent on AI and who will pay for it. Tan also said access to money could become AI's biggest limit.
