What happened
Micron (MU) stock fell about 3% to $998.15 on Monday after China's CXMT said it will launch denser server memory chips this year, raising fears of tougher competition. CXMT showed a new design, called 4F², that fits more memory cells into the same chip space, which could raise storage by 30% to 50%. Sandisk fell 5.7%, Seagate 3.4% and Western Digital 2.3%, while Samsung Electronics ended down 4.4%.
Why it matters
Micron's stock is up 261% this year through Friday, so news that a new rival is catching up can move it sharply. Memory chips are in short supply because AI data centers are buying them, and Micron kept 87 cents of every sales dollar after production costs last quarter. If CXMT can make denser chips in volume, supply could rise and prices fall, though South Korean industry watchers say a new design and stable mass production are separate challenges.
