What happened
Amazon (AMZN) is in advanced talks to buy Israeli AI startup Decart for about $7 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, after Anthropic walked away from a $6 billion bid. Decart makes software that lets AI programs move easily between chips from different makers, including Nvidia, Google and Amazon's own Trainium chips. The price is about 75% above the roughly $4 billion value Decart was given in May. Anthropic backed out after checking Decart's business last month, and Nvidia, which also invests in Decart, had been close to buying it. Nothing is signed yet.
Why it matters
Amazon's interest in Decart shows how hard big tech is working to loosen Nvidia's hold on AI chips. If AI programs can switch chips easily, customers could pick Amazon's own Trainium chips over Nvidia's, which could shift billions of dollars in spending. At $7 billion, the deal would also be bigger than Amazon's $6.5 billion purchase of MGM in 2022.
