What happened
Wolfspeed (WOLF) stock rose about 14% to $35.89 on Thursday after the Pentagon offered a conditional $1.5 billion loan that could give the government rights to buy up to 7.5% of the company. The Department of War offered the silicon carbide chipmaker a 30-year loan after markets closed Wednesday. Shares had risen 20% to 25% in late trading, then settled at a smaller gain once regular trading began. The offer is not final: Wolfspeed must raise $750 million elsewhere, turn its convertible notes (debt that can become shares) into stock, and win approval from Congress.
Why it matters
Wolfspeed makes silicon carbide, a tough chip material used in drones, radars and missile defense, and it only emerged from bankruptcy a year ago. The loan would help it pay off $600 million of debt due in 2030 and build more U.S. production. It also shows Washington is willing to lend to chipmakers in return for a possible ownership share. If the government uses its warrants (rights to buy shares at a set price), existing shareholders' stakes would shrink.
