What happened
Intel (INTC) stock fell about 4% in premarket trading on Monday, then traded near $117, after Musk confirmed TSMC talks on his Terafab chip project, clouding Intel's role. Terafab is a giant chip factory planned in Texas by Tesla and SpaceX, and Intel signed on as its first named partner in April. On Wednesday, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan told Bloomberg the company will stay involved. Musk said his team will "build and run the fab," and TSMC could at most rent some space. Intel shares rose about 2% before the market opened.
Why it matters
Intel's place in Terafab matters because the project could become a major customer for 14A, the new chip-making process Intel is counting on to win business from rivals. Reports of TSMC joining raised fears Intel could lose that role. Musk's and Tan's comments ease that worry for now, but the TSMC talks have not ended.
