What happened
Summit Therapeutics (SMMT) stock rose about 6% to near $16.49 on Tuesday after AstraZeneca agreed to invest $2 billion for a 12% stake, a vote of confidence in its cancer drug ivonescimab. Shares had jumped 17% before the market opened, but most of that gain faded during the day. AstraZeneca pays $18.36 a share, 18.6% above Monday's closing price. The two companies will also test ivonescimab alongside AstraZeneca's antibody-drug conjugates (drugs that carry chemotherapy straight to tumor cells).
Why it matters
Summit Therapeutics was running short of cash, with about $690 million in July, less than a year of funding. The $2 billion investment lifts its estimated cash to about $2.5 billion and shows a large drugmaker backing its cancer drug before a U.S. FDA decision due by November 14. It also adds to a race among big drug companies, including Merck, Pfizer and Bristol Myers Squibb, to develop this type of drug.
