What happened
Navitas Semiconductor (NVTS) stock jumped 20% in after-hours trading on Monday, from a $11.73 close, after winning a US Army award to develop 10 kV silicon carbide chips. The award is for a program called ALATTIS, which will build chips able to handle 10,000 volts (10 kV) of electricity for military systems, using a manufacturing process made in the US. Shares opened Tuesday at $12.81, about 9% higher, but by late morning traded near $11.96, only about 2% above Monday's close. The company did not disclose how much the award is worth.
Why it matters
Navitas (NVTS) is a small chip maker that is still losing money, and its sales fell to $10.5 million last quarter from $14.5 million a year earlier. Silicon carbide is a tough material that handles very high voltage, which is why it is used in power chips. An Army selection is a sign of trust and could lead to more defense-related work. But with no dollar value given, investors cannot yet tell how much revenue it may add.
