What happened
Alphabet (GOOGL) stock fell about 1% in Tuesday trading to around $340 after Google challenged two EU antitrust orders that force it to open Android to AI rivals and share search data. Google filed at the EU's General Court in Luxembourg against two July orders under the Digital Markets Act, the EU's big-tech rulebook. One lets rival AI assistants like OpenAI's use the same Android features as Gemini by August 2027; the other means sharing anonymised search data from January 2027. Google says this risks privacy and security; the Commission says safeguards are built in.
Why it matters
Alphabet is fighting rules that would make Google share two things that help it stay ahead: its search data and its Android phone features. If the orders stand, AI assistants and rival search engines could reach users more easily. Google says search data includes very personal questions, from medical worries to close relationships, so it wants stronger privacy protection first. The EU says the data will be anonymised and that Google can check recipients for serious risks.
