What happened
Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) stock jumped 10% to $84.24 on Thursday after CEO Phil Brace said only two regulatory approvals stand between the $22B Qorvo merger and close. Brace, speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference, named China's SAMR and South Korea's KFTC as the remaining hurdles and said the company is targeting a year-end close. The deal, announced October 2025, would create a combined radio-frequency chip company with $7.7 billion in annual revenue and $500 million or more in targeted yearly cost savings. Qorvo (QRVO) also gained 6%, both stocks bucking a broader fall in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index.
Why it matters
Skyworks Solutions is trying to complete the largest U.S. chip merger of 2026, and investors now see the path as nearly clear after the U.S. government signed off and only two countries remain. When the deal closes, the two biggest makers of radio-frequency chips for smartphones — the parts that handle wireless signals — will operate as one, potentially reshaping pricing and supply for device makers like Apple. For shareholders, the $500 million in targeted annual cost savings after the merger could add meaningfully to profits for years.
