Lead
Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) gained roughly 9% intraday on August 10, 2026, entering its second-quarter earnings release on the strongest footing in months. Two separate U.S. Space Force contracts totaling $663 million, announced within eight days of each other, and a KGI Securities upgrade to Outperform with a $107 price target combined to lift the stock 41% above its late-July trough. The Q2 print confirmed the underlying momentum: record quarterly revenue of $234.1 million, a record backlog of $2.36 billion, and a third consecutive narrowing of the net loss.Space Force Wins: The Catalyst
The twin Space Force awards drove the bulk of the pre-earnings optimism. A $266 million contract covers approximately 18 suborbital HASTE launches supporting U.S. missile defense testing, with missions slated to lift off from the Pacific Spaceport Complex at Kodiak Island, Alaska, beginning as early as late 2026. HASTE is a variant of Rocket Lab's proven Electron vehicle, grounding this award in demonstrated capability with more than 90 missions completed.
The larger, $397 million award—issued under the Space Force's Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program—tasks Rocket Lab with designing, building, launching, and operating a satellite constellation capable of tracking airborne threats in real time. That contract is contingent on the Neutron medium-lift rocket, which has not yet flown. Neutron's debut flight is targeted for late 2026, making its development schedule the central execution variable for the award's full realization.
Together, the $663 million in awards marked a meaningful expansion of Rocket Lab's role from launch-services provider to end-to-end defense space contractor.
Q2 Print: Revenue and Margins Both Set Records
The formal Q2 print reinforced the bullish pre-earnings narrative. Revenue of $234.1 million surpassed the Q1 2026 record by roughly $34 million and grew 62% from the year-earlier period. Product revenue—primarily satellites and spacecraft components—accounted for $181.3 million, while services contributed $52.7 million.
Gross profit nearly doubled to $84.6 million from $46.4 million a year ago. Non-GAAP gross margin widened to 41.5% from 36.9%, reflecting improved manufacturing efficiency at scale. The adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed sharply to $8.8 million from $27.6 million in Q2 2025. The net loss contracted to $49.3 million, or $0.08 per share, compared with $66.4 million, or $0.13 per share, a year earlier. Cash and equivalents stood at $2.13 billion, providing runway for Neutron development and the company's expanding acquisition strategy.
Backlog and Forward Guidance
The record backlog of $2.36 billion, up 137% year-over-year, represents the most substantial indicator of revenue durability in Rocket Lab's history as a public company. Management added that more than $1 billion in new contracts had already been executed across launch and space systems in the first weeks of Q3 2026. Q3 revenue guidance of $250 million to $265 million implies sequential growth of 7%–13% from the Q2 base.
Strategic Dimension
Beyond the Space Force wins, Rocket Lab closed its acquisitions of Mynaric—adding laser communication terminal manufacturing—and Motiv, which brings space robotics capabilities to the portfolio. The company also announced an agreement to acquire Iridium Communications, a move that would add a large recurring-revenue satellite constellation and represent a step-change in the company's scale and cash generation profile.
