Equifax (EFX) Q3 2026: Stock Jumps 11% on AI Savings

Equifax (EFX) jumped more than 11% to lead the S&P 500 on Oct. 20 as Q3 revenue rose 10% to $1.69 billion and AI-driven cost savings ran well ahead of target.

  • Equifax shares rose more than 11% on Oct. 20, the best performance in the S&P 500.
  • Q3 revenue rose 10% to $1.693 billion; adjusted EPS of $2.26 beat the $2.20 consensus.
  • AI productivity savings outran plan, and the company expects 100 bps of full-year margin expansion ex-FICO.

Lead

Equifax (EFX) shares surged more than 11% on Tuesday, Oct. 20, to lead the S&P 500 after the credit bureau reported third-quarter revenue of $1.693 billion, up 10% from a year earlier, and said AI-driven cost savings were running well above its target. Shares had been indicated about 10% higher at roughly $175 in premarket trading, and buying continued through the regular session. The results were released at 6:30 a.m. EDT.

What Happened in Equifax's Third Quarter?

Equifax grew revenue 10% on a reported basis and 9% in local currency, with net income up 32% to $211.7 million. Diluted EPS rose 39% to $1.79, and adjusted EPS rose 11% to $2.26, ahead of the $2.20 consensus estimate.

Adjusted EBITDA margin was 33.1%, up from 32.7% a year earlier. Excluding the FICO score pass-through, from Fair Isaac (FICO), margin expanded 130 basis points on operating leverage and productivity gains.

By segment:

  • Workforce Solutions: revenue was $693.9 million, up 7%.
  • U.S. Information Solutions (USIS): revenue was $599.1 million, up 13%. Its EBITDA margin ex-FICO reached 42.4%, up 320 basis points.
  • International: revenue was $399.5 million, up 9% reported and 7% in local currency. Asia Pacific grew 20% and Latin America 12%, both reported.

Diversified Markets, which covers business lines outside mortgage, grew 8%. The company returned $158 million to shareholders in the quarter: $92 million in share repurchases and $66 million in dividends.

Why Did Equifax Shares React So Sharply?

Shares jumped because the quarter showed that AI-driven efficiency is lifting profitability faster than management had planned, even as the U.S. mortgage market weakened. Revenue was in line with forecasts, so the margin and cost story drove the move.

Equifax raised its AI productivity goal to $150 million in July, doubling the earlier $75 million target. Savings have since tracked well ahead of that plan. Management described the company as being in the early stages of deployment. More than 80% of new products now use EFX.AI capabilities, and the new product vitality index reached a record 17%, well above the 10% long-term goal.

The cost discipline matters because mortgage-related revenue, a major earnings driver for credit bureaus, remains under pressure. Weakness in September cost roughly $20 million of third-quarter revenue.

How Does the Mortgage Slowdown Change the Guidance?

The mortgage slowdown trimmed the revenue outlook while the profit outlook improved. Equifax set its full-year 2026 revenue midpoint at $6.661 billion, roughly $80 million below prior guidance, which it attributes to lower mortgage activity. It kept adjusted EPS at a midpoint of $8.50.

The company raised its full-year margin target to 100 basis points of expansion ex-FICO, from 75 basis points. For the fourth quarter, it guided to:

  • Revenue of $1.605 billion to $1.635 billion
  • Adjusted EPS of $2.07 to $2.17

Management also signaled caution for 2027, with mortgage originations expected to decline by a high single-digit percentage. That makes non-mortgage growth and cost savings the main support for earnings next year. Diversified Markets is guided to high single-digit growth for 2026.

Strategic Context

Chief Executive Mark Begor said the quarter reflected execution on the company's EFX2028 strategic priorities. The plan relies on three levers:

  • A cloud-native data platform
  • Proprietary data assets, including the payroll and employment records held by Workforce Solutions
  • Newer products built on AI tools

Equifax's results show how a data-rich information-services company can protect margins through automation while demand in one end market falls. The company's competitors face the same mortgage backdrop, and its results set a benchmark for how much of that pressure can be offset on the cost side.

What Comes Next for Equifax?

The next test is whether AI savings keep compounding while mortgage volumes stay soft. Near-term attention turns to the fourth-quarter report, where the $2.07 to $2.17 EPS range will be measured against the company's cost trajectory. Updates to the AI savings target are possible given the pace of delivery so far.

The longer-term question is how much of the savings flows to the bottom line and how much is reinvested in new products. Mortgage-rate direction remains the main external variable for the first half of 2027.

Outlook

Equifax enters the final quarter of 2026 with 10% revenue growth, expanding margins and an AI program ahead of schedule, offset by a lower revenue outlook tied to mortgages. The 11% rally put the stock at the top of the S&P 500 and reflects the market's weight on efficiency gains over top-line softness.
