CoreWeave (CRWV) Upgraded to Buy by Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs upgraded CoreWeave (CRWV) to Buy and the stock rose about 6% even as its bonds yield roughly 15%, putting AI stocks' debt model in focus.

  • Goldman Sachs moved CoreWeave to Buy from Neutral on Oct. 19, calling it one of the strongest AI cloud operators.
  • CRWV rose about 6% to near $65 after a roughly 25% weekly slide, its biggest since November.
  • CoreWeave's 2031 and 2032 bonds yield above 15%, against about 9.7% at issuance in June.

Lead

CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) shares gained about 6% on Monday, Oct. 19, after Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) raised the AI cloud provider to Buy from Neutral. The bank described the company as one of the strongest operators among AI infrastructure providers. The stock traded near $65.37 in morning trade. The upgrade came days after a sell-off tied to the company's borrowing costs, and while its bonds still yield roughly 15%.

What Did Goldman Sachs Say About CoreWeave?

Goldman Sachs said the market is overestimating CoreWeave's future cost of capital and underestimating how much its returns can improve. The bank pointed to contract economics stronger than it had expected. It framed the sell-off as a chance to reassess a business it sees as better positioned than other so-called neoclouds, the newer data-center companies that rent AI computing capacity.

The upgrade did not come with a higher valuation. Goldman trimmed its price target even as it lifted the rating. The call rests on the view that financing fears have run ahead of operating fundamentals.

Why Are CoreWeave Bonds Yielding 15%?

CoreWeave bonds yield about 15% because investors are demanding far more compensation to fund a company that carries roughly $52 billion of debt and spends heavily on data centers. The 9.625% notes due 2032 traded near 78 cents on the dollar, lifting their yield above 15.4%. The 9.75% notes due 2031 yielded above 15.3%. Bonds sold in June priced at about 9.675%.

Those levels typically signal distress. The cost of insuring CoreWeave debt against default through credit default swaps, which work like insurance on a bond, hit its highest intraday level on record. S&P Global rates the company B+, in speculative-grade territory. Shares fell about 16% in a single session on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and about 25% over the week, touching their lowest point of 2026 before the upgrade.

The pressure reflects the company's model. CoreWeave borrows to build capacity for customers under long-term contracts, so higher yields raise the cost of every new project. One Wall Street estimate projects negative free cash flow of about $67 billion from 2026 to 2028, with roughly $59 billion of new borrowing needed to cover it.

How Did the Market Respond?

Peers rallied alongside CoreWeave. Nebius (NBIS) rose about 7% to $177.35, and Oracle (ORCL) gained about 2% to $130.73. The moves suggest the sell-off had been treated as a sector-wide question about AI financing, not only a CoreWeave problem.

The rebound left CoreWeave well below its August levels. The stock has fallen roughly 43% since it reported second-quarter results on Aug. 11.

What Does This Mean for AI Stocks?

The episode shows that AI stocks now trade on credit conditions as much as on demand for computing power. Equity investors are weighing contracted backlog against the interest bill needed to deliver it. Companies that fund expansion with high-yield debt are the most exposed, while those with large internal cash flows face less pressure.

The divergence between a 6% equity gain and a 15% bond yield also shows the two markets are pricing different outcomes. Equity holders are paying for growth and improving returns on signed contracts. Bondholders are pricing the risk that financing costs outrun that growth.

Outlook

The next test for CoreWeave is whether its bond yields ease from about 15% and whether it can raise capital at lower cost. Until then, borrowing costs remain the main variable for the stock. The company's next earnings report will show whether contract economics are improving as Goldman expects. The wider group of AI infrastructure names will keep trading on the same link between credit spreads and capital spending.
