CoreWeave (CRWV) Rebounds 6% After Record Swap Spike

CoreWeave stock rebounded about 6% Thursday after a 15% Wednesday plunge, as Nvidia's Jensen Huang ruled out a backstop and credit swaps hit a record.

  • CRWV fell more than 15% Wednesday and closed Thursday up about 5.9% after trading down as much as 9.5% earlier in the session.
  • Five-year credit default swaps hit a record 1,194.5 basis points, pricing a default chance above 60% over five years.
  • Huang said CoreWeave needs no Nvidia backstop and that its cost of capital is falling.

Lead

CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) shares recovered about 6% on Thursday, October 15, after a 15% drop on Wednesday. The recovery followed comments from Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) chief executive Jensen Huang that the AI cloud provider is getting stronger and does not need Nvidia to backstop its finances. The rebound came on the same day the cost of insuring CoreWeave's debt reached an all-time high, leaving one of the most closely watched ai stocks caught between an equity bounce and a credit market that remains alarmed.

What Happened to CoreWeave Stock This Week?

CoreWeave stock lost more than 15% on Wednesday, then fell as much as 9.5% on Thursday before reversing to close about 5.9% higher. The four-day slide erased more than $10 billion in market value, and shares ended Thursday near $67. No company-specific announcement explained the drop, which pointed to a broader reassessment of debt-funded AI infrastructure.

Nvidia shares fell roughly 1.8% on Thursday as the credit concerns spread to the chip supplier at the center of CoreWeave's business.

What Do CoreWeave's Credit Default Swaps Signal?

CoreWeave's five-year credit default swaps, contracts that pay out if a borrower defaults, signal that credit investors see a material risk of default. The spread rose as much as 74.5 basis points intraday to a record 1,194.5 basis points. That level prices a default probability above 60% within five years. In June the same contracts traded at roughly a third of the current level.

Bond markets moved in the same direction. The yield on CoreWeave's 9.75% notes due 2031 climbed to about 15.8%, well above the roughly 7% coupon on a lease-backed bond the company priced in June. The company is rated speculative grade.

Does CoreWeave Need an Nvidia Backstop?

Huang said it does not. Speaking at an event in Stockholm, he said CoreWeave's strength is improving "every day," added that he is optimistic, and said the company's "cost of capital is actually decreasing." He also dismissed concerns about circular financing, in which a supplier helps fund purchases of its own products, as "ridiculous."

The relationship is close. Nvidia is CoreWeave's primary chip supplier and holds a stake of about 10%, making it the second-largest shareholder.

The Gap Between Equity and Credit

Huang's description of a falling cost of capital sits awkwardly beside bond yields near 16% and record swap pricing. CoreWeave carried about $30 billion of debt as of June and has budgeted $31 billion to $35 billion of capital expenditure for 2026. It reported a contracted backlog of $99.4 billion in July, which supporters of the stock cite as evidence that demand is secure.

The disagreement turns on timing. Equity holders are valuing future revenue from signed contracts. Credit investors are pricing the near-term financing needed to build the capacity that serves them. Regulators and international bodies have flagged supplier-linked financing as a potential source of systemic risk, which adds attention to every move in the swap market.

Outlook

CoreWeave's equity rebound relieves immediate pressure, but the credit signals have not eased. The next test is the company's ability to raise new capital at costs that support Huang's claim. Swap spreads, bond yields and the stock's reaction to any new financing will show whether the market accepts that argument or keeps pricing in stress across AI infrastructure borrowers.
