ASML Q3 2026: Record €11.7B Sales, Yet Shares Slide

ASML posted record Q3 2026 sales of €11.7 billion and a sharp earnings beat, yet its shares sank to a 20-day low as the good news was already priced in.

  • ASML Q3 2026 sales hit €11.7 billion, with a record 57.5% gross margin and €5.0 billion in net income.
  • Basic EPS of €12.95 (about $14.65) topped the $12.13 consensus by roughly 21%.
  • Shares fell 1.86% in regular trading and 2.26% after hours to $1,679, a 20-day low.

Lead

ASML Holding (NASDAQ: ASML) reported its strongest quarter on record on October 14, with total net sales of €11.7 billion and net income of €5.0 billion. Earnings per share beat expectations by a wide margin. The Dutch maker of chipmaking lithography equipment still saw its stock slip to a 20-day low, because investors had already built much of the strength into the price.

What Did ASML Report for the Third Quarter?

ASML reported net system sales of €8.4 billion and installed base management sales of €3.3 billion, roughly €400 million above its own guidance. Gross margin reached a record 57.5% and operating margin 44.4%, helped by product mix and execution on its capacity ramp.

Basic EPS came in at €12.95, against a consensus of $12.13. Net income includes a €500 million gain from revaluing the company's investment in French AI developer Mistral, which flatters the headline beat. Revenue of about $13.2 billion edged past a forecast near $13.16 billion, a far narrower margin than the earnings surprise.

The company shipped 121 lithography systems. Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) tools made up 49% of system sales and immersion DUV systems 39%. Logic chipmakers accounted for 54% of system demand and memory makers 46%.

Why Did ASML Shares Fall Despite the Beat?

ASML shares fell because the result confirmed expectations that were already embedded in a premium valuation. The stock slid 1.86% in regular trading and a further 2.26% after hours to $1,679, roughly 16% below its 52-week high of $1,999.96. At a price-to-earnings ratio near 55, the shares leave little room for results that merely meet a strong outlook.

Wider conditions added pressure. Hot inflation data and higher bond yields weighed on semiconductor shares around the release, and rich valuations across AI stocks make them sensitive to any rise in discount rates. The pattern is common for bellwethers that run ahead of earnings: a record quarter lands as confirmation, not surprise.

Where Did the Sales Come From?

Sales were spread across Asia, with Taiwan at 32% of the total, South Korea at 31% and China at 23%. The United States accounted for 13%. China's share remains material as export controls limit which tools can ship, though the quarter's strength was driven by leading-edge demand from foundry and memory customers.

ASML returned cash at pace. It repurchased 2.8 million shares for €4.1 billion in the quarter and declared an interim dividend of €1.88 per share. Cumulative buybacks and dividends now total about €55 billion.

What Does the Outlook Say About 2027 and 2028?

ASML guided to fourth-quarter net sales of €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion with a gross margin near 57%, implying a step up of more than 20% at the midpoint. Full-year 2026 sales are expected at €44 billion to €45 billion with a gross margin near 56%. EUV shipments should reach about 65 units, more than 50% above 2025.

Chief executive Christophe Fouquet said customers expect that their supply "will not meet the demand at least until 2028." The company plans to expand capacity by 30% in both 2027 and 2028, and management indicated that even this build-out will not satisfy full customer demand. Customer interest in 2030 orders points to a long planning horizon for AI-driven fabrication capacity.

Strategic Context

ASML also outlined a collaboration with TSMC (NYSE: TSM) on 12-inch photomasks, with a pilot line targeted for 2031 and system readiness in 2033. Projected throughput of 4,700 to 5,800 wafers per day compares with 3,800 on the current EXE:5600 platform, a gain of more than 40%. A new YieldStar 550 metrology system supports 14 angstrom logic and one-dimensional DRAM nodes, with productivity up more than 60%.

Outlook

ASML's fundamentals remain strong, with record margins, a Q4 guide implying a sharp acceleration and supply that trails demand through 2028. The share price reaction reflects valuation and macro conditions, not a deterioration in the order picture. The next test is whether fourth-quarter delivery reaches the guided €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion range, and whether bond yields and inflation data steady the chip sector's rich multiples.
