Alcoa Q3 2026: EPS Beat Lifts AA Shares 2% After Hours

Alcoa (AA) rose about 2% after hours on Q3 adjusted EPS of $1.82 versus $1.47 expected, while Interactive Brokers and J.B. Hunt slipped 1-2% on Oct. 15.

  • Alcoa (AA) adjusted EPS of $1.82 topped the $1.47 consensus, and shares gained about 2% after hours.
  • Interactive Brokers (IBKR) adjusted EPS of $0.67 trailed the $0.68 consensus; shares fell about 1%.
  • J.B. Hunt (JBHT) shares fell 2.3% after hours despite a 20% revenue increase.

Lead

Alcoa (NYSE: AA) rose about 2% in extended trading on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, after reporting third-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.82 per share, well above the $1.47 consensus. The aluminum producer posted net income of $483 million, or $1.81 per share, on revenue of $3.704 billion. Interactive Brokers (NASDAQ: IBKR) and J.B. Hunt (NASDAQ: JBHT) each slipped 1-2% after their own results, as investors weighed narrow misses and margin pressure against solid top-line growth.

How Did Alcoa Beat Expectations?

Alcoa beat on the strength of operations, which offset weaker metal prices. Adjusted net income was $485 million, and adjusted EBITDA excluding special items was $789 million. Adjusted EPS was down from $2.12 in the second quarter, and revenue fell 7% sequentially.

Realized aluminum prices averaged $4,527 per metric ton, down from $4,752 in the second quarter. Alumina prices rose 7% sequentially to an average of $353 per ton, helped by steadier refinery performance and higher shipment volumes.

Cash generation was strong. Operating cash flow was $643 million and free cash flow was $472 million. The company reported no share repurchases in the quarter. Year-to-date net income stands at $1.315 billion, or $4.95 per diluted share.

What Is Alcoa's Outlook for the Fourth Quarter?

Alcoa expects alumina segment EBITDA in the fourth quarter to be consistent with the third quarter. The aluminum segment faces an unfavorable impact of about $30 million from higher raw material costs and planned maintenance. Full-year 2026 guidance was reaffirmed, including alumina production of 9.5-9.6 million metric tons and aluminum production of 2.4-2.6 million metric tons.

Annual interest expense is now projected at $185 million, reflecting a larger debt load. Total debt reached $4.822 billion, up from $2.448 billion at the end of 2025, after a $2.6 billion offering to fund the AliGroup acquisition. Net debt was $414 million, and the ending cash balance was $4.4 billion.

South32 (ASX: S32) shareholders approved the transaction on Oct. 15, and closing is expected in the first half of 2027. Alcoa also signed agreements to sell portions of the Massena East facility for potential proceeds of $315 million, pending regulatory approvals.

Why Did Interactive Brokers Shares Slip?

Interactive Brokers fell about 1% because adjusted EPS of $0.67 landed a cent below the $0.68 consensus, even though the underlying business grew quickly. Net revenues of $1.91 billion topped the $1.87 billion estimate, and GAAP diluted EPS rose 17% to $0.69.

Customer accounts grew 35% from a year earlier to 5.576 million. Commission revenue rose 12% to $602 million on an 18% increase in daily average revenue trades. Net interest income climbed 19% to $1.15 billion on higher customer margin loans and credit balances. The board also raised the quarterly dividend to $0.15 per share from $0.0875.

The reaction shows how demanding expectations are for the brokerage sector. Account growth and record activity were already in the price, so a one-cent shortfall was enough to produce a small decline.

Why Did J.B. Hunt Fall Despite Higher Revenue?

J.B. Hunt fell 2.31% to $229.87 after hours, from a Thursday close of $235.31, because profit barely grew while costs rose. Net earnings were $172.4 million, or $1.82 per share, up 0.9% from $1.76 a year earlier. Revenue rose 20% to about $3.67 billion, ahead of the $3.59 billion consensus.

Operating income fell 5% from the second quarter. Management cited driver-related investments, volatile fuel prices, and higher claims and medical costs, with driver costs making up more than half of the pressure.

Results varied by segment:

  • Intermodal operating income rose 18% to $147.5 million, helped by an 8% increase in loads.
  • Dedicated operating income fell about 22% to $81.7 million.
  • Brokerage returned to profit at $9.6 million, with revenue per load up 27%.
  • Final Mile Services operating income fell 76% to $1.6 million as stops declined 10%.

The CEO said the largest opportunity ahead is ensuring pricing reflects the value the company creates, a signal that margin repair is the focus for the coming quarters.

Market Reaction

The three moves were small, but they point in different directions. Alcoa was rewarded for an operational beat and stable cash flow. Interactive Brokers and J.B. Hunt were penalized for narrow gaps against expectations, even with strong revenue.

Outlook

Alcoa's next test is the fourth quarter, when higher raw material costs and maintenance weigh on the aluminum segment while alumina holds steady. The AliGroup closing in 2027 will keep leverage in focus. Interactive Brokers enters the fourth quarter with accelerating account growth and a higher dividend. J.B. Hunt's priority is converting 20% revenue growth into better margins through pricing and cost control.
