The most obvious risk is that natural gas prices rise. If you hold ZSL and natural gas surges, the fund will decline. This is the intended inverse relationship.
A subtler risk is that natural gas prices are stable or slowly falling, yet ZSL loses value anyway due to rolling costs, expense ratios, and volatility decay. An investor might be right about the direction but still lose money.
The third risk is time. Every day ZSL exists, costs accumulate. Holding ZSL for tactical periods — a few days or weeks — makes sense for a specific bet. Holding it for years almost always produces disappointing results because the compounding effect of daily rebalancing and structural costs dominates the math.
How to use and research ZSL
Anyone considering ZSL should understand the natural gas market: seasonal demand patterns, storage levels, production trends, import/export dynamics, and the geopolitical environment all drive prices.
