How the business works
Vislink’s product line is built around a simple idea: wireless video is hard. Over short distances, it’s straightforward. Over long distances, through buildings, in busy cities where many radio signals compete for airspace — that’s where it gets complicated. Vislink’s engineers work on transmitters that compress video so it fits into available bandwidth, receivers that extract that signal cleanly from noise, and software that ties it all together.
The company’s core products fall into a few categories. The CLIQ line is a set of compact RF transmitters — devices that use traditional radio frequencies to send video over distances of several miles. These are popular in broadcast because RF is reliable in many outdoor and semi-indoor environments. The DragonFly series is a new generation of ultra-miniaturised transmitters, small enough to fit on a camera operator’s belt or a drone, that can work in either RF or 5G cellular modes. As networks add 5G coverage, Vislink is pushing harder into cellular transmission — using the public 5G network to backhaul video instead of relying on private RF bands that may not be available everywhere.
A newer product, MeshConnect, is a wireless mesh network platform. Instead of sending video to a single central receiver, MeshConnect creates a network of nodes that relay signals to each other and adapt automatically if links fail. This is useful in large-scale events, disaster zones, or military operations where a single-point-of-failure transmission path isn’t reliable enough.
The market and the competition
Three customer segments buy from Vislink. Broadcast is the largest and most visible: news organisations, sports broadcasters, entertainment producers. They want to cover events live from stadiums, from disaster sites, from anywhere. RF transmission has been the standard for decades; it’s proven, it works, and broadcasters know how to use it.
Defence and military are the second segment. Armed forces need video from forward positions, drones, vehicles, and personnel. They have strict security requirements and often operate in areas without public cellular infrastructure. RF is essential for defence work.
Public safety — police, fire, rescue — is the third. They use Vislink gear for incident command, operational visibility, and coordinating large responses. Like defence, they often work where cellular isn’t available.
Competition comes from established broadcast-equipment vendors and from new entrants building on cellular infrastructure. Vislink’s advantage is deep expertise in RF transmission and miniaturised design. Its challenge is that as 5G and bonded cellular improve, cheaper off-the-shelf cellular equipment can do some of what Vislink does, and customers may not see the need for specialised gear. The company is betting that hybrid solutions — RF where it’s reliable, cellular where it’s available, and software that switches between them automatically — will stay valuable.
The heritage and the pivot
Vislink itself is a relatively recent name. The company began as xG Technology, founded in Sarasota, Florida in 2002, focused on RF transmission. Over time, xG Technology acquired two other companies: Vislink, which had a 50-year history in video communications, and Integrated Microwave Technologies. By 2017, after these acquisitions, xG Technology decided to retire its own name and adopt the Vislink brand, which had reputation and heritage in the broadcast world. In 2019, the company moved its headquarters to Hackettstown, New Jersey. It now has offices in Massachusetts, California, and internationally in the UK, Dubai, and Singapore.
This history matters because it explains the company’s DNA. It’s not a startup built on a new idea. It’s a consolidation of multiple companies with expertise in video transmission, working to merge their technologies and customer bases into a unified business. That can create strength — combined engineering, access to more customers — but also complexity and the risk that the integration doesn’t work cleanly.
The technology transition
Vislink is in the middle of a technology transition. RF transmission is mature, proven, and the backbone of broadcast. But 5G cellular is expanding, and it offers advantages: worldwide coverage, no need for frequency licenses, and low cost to the customer who can piggyback on existing networks. Vislink is building 5G transmitters and receivers, and exploring ways to bond multiple cellular connections so video doesn’t drop if one connection fails. This is the right move strategically — staying RF-only would be a declining business long-term — but transitions are risky. The company has to keep RF customers happy while investing in new technology that may cannibilise RF revenue.
The mesh networking play, MeshConnect, is a bet that large-scale events and operations will need distributed, self-healing networks. It’s a different product category from traditional point-to-point transmission. If it gains traction, it opens a new revenue stream. If it doesn’t, it’s a distraction from the core business.
What matters for investors
Watch for updates on customer wins and deployments. Each major broadcaster, defence programme, or public-safety agency using Vislink’s gear is an anchor customer that generates recurring revenue. Watch for the pace of 5G product releases and adoption. If Vislink gets 5G right and wins customers early, it has a runway into the next decade. If 5G adoption is slow or competitors offer cheaper cellular solutions, the company may face margin pressure. Also watch for updates on MeshConnect — if it’s gaining real-world use or winning contracts, the business is diversifying; if it stays a small pilot programme, the company remains dependent on traditional RF and new cellular sales.
The industry is mature and competitive, so Vislink’s stock is not a growth story. The investment thesis is whether the company can maintain its share in RF while successfully transitioning to cellular and mesh, and whether its technology and relationships justify a premium over cheaper, simpler competitors.
