The fueling-station model and capital intensity

The company acquires or leases land, installs CNG compression and storage equipment, builds customer-facing fuel dispensers, and operates those stations. Customers — primarily fleet operators running Class 8 trucks (the heavy rigs that haul freight) — drive in to refuel, paying per unit of gas (measured in diesel-gallon-equivalents, or DGEs). The capital requirements are substantial. A single heavy-duty CNG station can cost millions to build, depending on site preparation, equipment capacity, and permitting complexity. Why fleets switch to CNG

These policies effectively subsidize the fuel switch by lowering the total cost of ownership for fleets and by offsetting capital costs for station builders like Verde.

But CNG’s fortunes are also tethered to commodity-price spreads. If natural gas prices spike relative to diesel, the fuel-cost advantage evaporates, and fleets lose interest in the switch. Or a state or federal agency might fund infrastructure buildout in strategic corridors to jump-start adoption. Verde has benefited from both mechanisms — partnerships with major fleets (like waste haulers) and grants or credits that lower the capital burden.

The result is that Verde’s growth depends on continued regulatory support, on fuel-price spreads that favor CNG, and on large, creditworthy fleet operators willing to be early movers in the fuel switch.
